Lithium ion batteries are nowadays widely used in energy storage systems, busses, rolling stock, marine, and numerous other applications. Li-ion battery packs and storage systems consist of multiple battery cells and a battery management system. Due to the increased energy density, fire has, despite the battery management system, become a common concern associated with the usage. If the temperature of the battery cells exceeds a certain critical level, thermal runaway with or without a fire incident occurs.
